Discover the benefits of polyurethane dispersions

It’s increasingly getting tough for coating and adhesive formulators and end-users. The stringent environmental regulations enforce the formulators to use only low VOC products; coating formulators, on the other hand, are still on the fence as they just have to meet the technical requirements for the coating or adhesive.

Solution, however, surfaced; this time it came in the form of Waterborne Polyurethane, which are high on quality and low in VOCs.
  • Here is a list of properties that define modern day polyurethane dispersion range:
  • Ultra low solvent content
  • Ultra low odor
  • low viscosity at high molecular weights
  • low temperature drying
  • incredible polyurethane performance
  • superior adhesion to a wide variety of substrates
Polyurethane dispersions are known to provide superior coating and adhesive properties for use on different substrates such as wood, plastics, and glass. The increasingly regulatory compulsions for the usage of low VOC products have drove the demand for Polyurethane Dispersion across industries; and this demand is going to keep on soaring in the future as well. However, the manufacturers are likely to keep on experimenting for bettering the quality of their products and to come up with more products to meet the growing demands for high quality, environmentally friendly products for coatings and adhesives.

Waterborne Polyurethane – The Super Glue

Almost all of us know about polyurethane that it acts as glue. Being a thermoplastic substance, it contains copies of organic chain units that are linked to urethane links. The chemical reaction of polyurethane polymer results in the creation of this adhesive, which is superbly strong and resistant to all major kinds of deterioration. Its exceptional bonding properties make it the most sought after material for a wide range of industrial and construction purposes. Though there are different types of adhesives available in the market but Waterborne Polyurethane has its own space in the market.

The very first property is that it is completely water-resistant. It has excellent resistance to harsh alkaline and acidic chemicals and this adhesive does not dissolve or dismantle when in contact with these chemicals. It has extremely low viscosity. Moreover, the flexibility of this adhesive allows it to absorb shock and vibrations. Therefore, these properties make it most perfect for constructing buildings and furniture.

Experts suggest that due to its high adhesive properties, it becomes difficult to remove it as it creates a permanent bond with the other surface. However, acetone, a chemical solvent is found to be able removing this adhesive. In numerous application, it has been found that this adhesive takes a bit longer to firmly stick surfaces together.

The development of polyurethane dispersion

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing trend of the use of polyurethane dispersion across industries due to various reasons. In fact, it has been considered the best and the safest substitute for solvent based coatings. These solvent-based coatings are found to be eco-friendly in nature.

In the polyurethane coating industry, their usage is growing rapidly and expected to grow further due to various environment legislations. The increased use of these coatings has brought up various technical advancements. These dispersions are made up of fully reacted polyureas, which contain small and discrete polymer particles, ranging from 0.01-5.0 microns in a continuous water phase. They don’t feature isocyanate residues and consist of zero or a very low level of volatile organic content. They have been found safe to use and are very much suitable for compliant coating applications.

The most widely used application of Polyurethane Dispersion is in the manufacturing of different types of foams. For example, the flexible foam is used in the upholstery sector and the rigid foams are used inside the walls of refrigerators and freezers. In the similar way, foams are also used in car seats, head rests and arm rests. It is also known that the manufacturing of thermal insulation panels is also designed using this. The polyurethane consists of medium-density fibers that can make awesome stretchable dresses.

The need of polyurethane dispersions

They add color to your rooms which otherwise might be looking dull to you. There are several automobiles and toys that have been made using this product. They are also widely used in the buildings, farm machinery, and the tools that are used for the wind, rain and to protect from heat and sun. They are actually a colorful coating that is widely popular in industries and are also used in homes.

A lot of money is spent upon it annually if you look at the Canadians then they alone spend a lot of money. They have 150m paint plants that produce this colorful coating in huge amounts. A lot of polyurethane dispersions are sold by people across the world for varied purposes.

This paint has not been found recently this has been is use for thousands of years. Its usage was started by Egyptians and they really loved the whole idea of using this paint unanimously in a lot of things. When you use this product then you can get varied colors like reds, yellows, and even greens.

Certain pigments were also imported from some area so as to supplement its need. Now you can think how widely they are used and they are needed by people in every industry.

The corrosion resistance of polyurethane coatings

There are several products available in the market and they will provide a very good corrosion protection, but the polyurethane coatings are some of the best ones that are available in the market.

If you have to understand how they are so good against the level of corrosion then you must understand how the corrosion works also. There are products that are made up of iron, steel, and even some other metals which will return back to their normal process.

The process which the metals undergo is known as the electrochemical process. There are electrons that usually flow from high energy areas of the metal to even the low energy areas and go through a solution that is conducting in the surface of the metal.

The conducting material which is formed is known as electrolyte and this formation is caused due to the water, rain moisture, and even the humidity. You don’t have to have a lot of electrolytes so as to avoid or cause the corrosion. With just 60% you will acquire relative humidity to form electrolytes that will cause the corrosion.

Where there are high energy areas of metal that is known as anode. The current that takes place will leave the electrolyte from the anode and then return to the metal and form polyurethane dispersions.

High energy areas of a metal are called an anode. Current will leave the electrolyte from the anode and return to the metal. The number of pairs of cathodes and anodes are specific to each kind of metal. Metals with more pairs are more susceptible to corrosion. Machined metal surfaces have more pairs, for example. Corrosion can occur within minutes in these metals.

The basics about Epoxy curing agent

The epoxy curing coatings are known for several reasons like the boats, floors, and anything that requires a strong and a waterproof coating that is so much more important. If you require epoxy paint for the purpose of a garage or the warehouse floor, you would require some kind of background information on such products which would comprise of their composition, utility, and some other things too.

This kind of information is required if you want to upscale the surface of the building, so you must know if you are doing it in the correct form or not.

There are some qualities of an epoxy curing agent like they have amazing chemical resistance, are very durable and they have really good bond strength. All these utilities when combined together augment the look and even the functionality of the garage floor.

The magic takes place due to a chemical reaction which causes heat and the mixture to become hardened. There are two kinds of epoxy- a base and then a curing agent. When these two things blend in a certain manner, a chemical reaction takes place which emits heat and causes the mixture to get further hardened into an inert plastic form. The reaction that happens takes less than a year to be completed and it becomes very easy to be used in diverse ways.

Incozol 2 – An effective Moisture Scavenger

Incozol 2 from Incorez is an oxazolidine that is supposed for use as an effective moisture scavenger in urethane coatings and sealants. It can also be employed to eradicate residual moisture from solvents, polyols and prepolymers and further from plasticizers and pigments.
Incozol 2 has a low toxicity rating and hydrolyses on exposure to moisture, yielding reactive hydroxyl and amine groups.
There are numerous advantages of this moisture scavenger that include:
• It eradicates CO2 bubbles and pinholes in two-component systems.
• It reduces down glossing and hazing under high humidity application conditions.
• It also improves gloss, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance.
• Prevents gassing and gelling in one-component moisture cure systems.
• Completely reacts into urethane polymer matrix.
• Outstanding handling properties.
Incozol 2 is perfect for use in one- or two-component systems. It is not usually recommended in one-component paints or sealants with a low NCO content as the residual amino alcohol reacts with the isocyanate during storage, during the reactivity of the entire system and resulting into retarded drying times.
