Waterborne Polyurethane – The Super Glue

Almost all of us know about polyurethane that it acts as glue. Being a thermoplastic substance, it contains copies of organic chain units that are linked to urethane links. The chemical reaction of polyurethane polymer results in the creation of this adhesive, which is superbly strong and resistant to all major kinds of deterioration. Its exceptional bonding properties make it the most sought after material for a wide range of industrial and construction purposes. Though there are different types of adhesives available in the market but Waterborne Polyurethane has its own space in the market. 



The very first property is that it is completely water-resistant. It has excellent resistance to harsh alkaline and acidic chemicals and this adhesive does not dissolve or dismantle when in contact with these chemicals. It has extremely low viscosity. Moreover, the flexibility of this adhesive allows it to absorb shock and vibrations. Therefore, these properties make it most perfect for constructing buildings and furniture.

Experts suggest that due to its high adhesive properties, it becomes difficult to remove it as it creates a permanent bond with the other surface. However, acetone, a chemical solvent is found to be able removing this adhesive. In numerous application, it has been found that this adhesive takes a bit longer to firmly stick surfaces together.

The development of polyurethane dispersion

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing trend of the use of polyurethane dispersion across industries due to various reasons. In fact, it has been considered the best and the safest substitute for solvent based coatings. These solvent-based coatings are found to be eco-friendly in nature. 



In the polyurethane coating industry, their usage is growing rapidly and expected to grow further due to various environment legislations. The corrosion resistance of polyurethane coatings

There are several products available in the market and they will provide a very good corrosion protection, but the polyurethane coatings are some of the best ones that are available in the market.

If you have to understand how they are so good against the level of corrosion then you must understand how the corrosion works also. There are products that are made up of iron, steel, and even some other metals which will return back to their normal process.

The process which the metals undergo is known as the electrochemical process. There are electrons that usually flow from high energy areas of the metal to even the low energy areas and go through a solution that is conducting in the surface of the metal.

The conducting material which is formed is known as electrolyte and this formation is caused due to the water, rain moisture, and even the humidity. You don’t have to have a lot of electrolytes so as to avoid or cause the corrosion. With just 60% you will acquire relative humidity to form electrolytes that will cause the corrosion.

Where there are high energy areas of metal that is known as anode. The current that takes place will leave the electrolyte from the anode and then return to the metal and form polyurethane dispersions.

The number of pairs of cathodes and anodes are specific to each kind of metal. Metals with more pairs are more susceptible to corrosion. Machined metal surfaces have more pairs, for example. Corrosion can occur within minutes in these metals.
